ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: EMILY JOHNSON
Like a lot of CrossFit athletes, Emily thought she was doing everything right.
She trained consistently.
She prioritized protein.
She ate “healthy.”
But eventually something stopped adding up.
“The effort I was putting into training just wasn’t being reflected in my results.” - Emily
Sound familiar?
After about four years of CrossFit, she realized the problem wasn’t her workouts.
It was her fuel.
The Fear of Eating More
When myself (Nutrition Coach Kalie) and Emily first started talking about nutrition, she admitted she was nervous.
She liked how her body looked and worried that increasing her calories would undo all of the progress she’d worked so hard for.
It’s one of the biggest fears I hear from athletes.
“If I eat more, won’t I gain weight?”
The reality is that many people trying to improve performance and body composition are unintentionally under-fuelling. They aren’t eating enough to recover, build muscle, or perform at their best.
The Eye-Opening Part
Once she started tracking her nutrition, one thing became obvious.
She wasn’t eating enough carbohydrates.
Even more surprising, her calorie intake was all over the place.
Some days she ate far too little. Other days she massively overate.
There was no consistency.
Instead of simply eating more, she started eating enough consistently.
That’s a huge difference.
What Happened Next?
The changes weren’t overnight.
The hardest part, Emily says, was being patient.
But week after week, the evidence kept showing up.
She started PR’ing her lifts. Her endurance improved dramatically. Her energy stayed steady throughout long shifts at work, instead of crashing halfway through the day. She began building noticeable muscle.
Most importantly, she felt better.
“My workouts have gotten exponentially better since I’ve started fueling properly.” - Emily
The Biggest Transformation Wasn’t Physical
Yes, she gained muscle. Yes, she became stronger. Yes, her conditioning improved.
But the biggest win wasn’t something you could measure in the gym.
It was her relationship with food.
Instead of seeing food as something to restrict, she now sees it as fuel.
“I’m definitely in a much better place now that I know how good eating enough feels.” - Emily
That mindset shift changes everything.
The Truth About Body Recomposition
So many people believe that if they want to look leaner, they need to eat less.
But often, the physique people are chasing comes from building muscle, recovering well, and performing better—not from seeing how little they can survive on.
As she put it:
“The body you want probably weighs more than you think it does.” - Emily
That’s such a powerful perspective.
Muscle has weight. Strength has weight. Confidence has weight.
And all of those things require fuel.
What’s Next?
Her answer was simple.
“Get WAY stronger.” - Emily
And based on the progress she’s made this past year, I have no doubt she will.
Takeaway
If you’re training hard but your progress has stalled, don’t automatically assume you need to eat less.
Sometimes the answer is exactly the opposite.
Fuel your body.
Recover properly.
Build muscle.
Trust the process.
Because the goal isn’t to eat as little as possible.
The goal is to become the strongest, healthiest version of yourself, and that starts with giving your body what it actually needs.
